The Good News about the Bad Economy
ABCrane, 2009 On one side of the political fence sits a sector of the citizenry that believes corporations are great. Dangling from the other side of the fence are those who bitterly criticize corporations. In praise of corporations, the pro-corporates reason that “they create jobs,” “they keep prices low through economy of scale and competitive forces,” “they spur innovation and growth,” and “they promote technological progress.” Anti-corporates warn that corporations “encourage a damaging, consumeristic lifestyle,” “they drive mom-n-pops into bankruptcy,” “they pay meager wages and expand the gap between rich and poor,” and “they pollute the environment.”

Examples of these businesses include worker owned cooperatives that promote financial equality; green businesses that engage in sustainable and fairtrade practices; and nonprofits and microfinancers that work in a myriad of ways to empower the disenfranchised.
